Searching for -topos in 20th century Cyprus
The dissertation aims to examine the role played by one of Nicosia’s most iconic buildings - The Ledra Palace Hotel - in forging a link between Cypriot society and nation building in the 20th century and the concept of utopia. The aim is to look into the way the building was used rather than designed. Not searching for utopia within its form, instead looking at ‘utopianist’ attitudes by the Cypriot people, particularly Greek Cypriots. In this sense the writing becomes “multi-vocal”, hoping to unfold a different narrative to society and nation-building in latter and post-colonial Cyprus. A historiography not framed by government policies and ambitions but rather one which unfolds organically through the dreams and hopes of the local people.
